Many in the WY work study class have begun their jobs at various companies. Everything is so new all at once; it's like starting at a new school.
We are all interested in knowing how the first week(s) of work has been going for each of you. How were you oriented into the first days? Where do you work, what is the department, what are you doing so far? Co-workers--how is that going? What questions do you have about work?

I work at Northern Trust in the Canal building. On our first day they had really nice orientation set up and then we got out id's, and then went to work. i really like my job and i LOVE my bass, he's so nice and helps me with anything. my co-workers are really nice to. the best part of working in a place like this(other than learning new things and meeting new people0, is the free food. i go from 8:30 AM till 5PM, though it seems long, the day goes by really fast. During my day, i scan papers onto the computer, and im done with that by 10:30, then i really just relax until 1, thats when i go for my hour lunch, then @ 2 i go pick up checks and diliver them to the 4th floor, then i check the mail, after that im usually just waiting to get off, because i really have no responsibilities. The oththing that really helped me with getting comfortable with the job was that i had an old coop help me for a week. she was sooo nice andguided my with everything. i didnt thing i was going to like it this much, but i do. Northern is a really nice company.
I work with Tishman Construction on CPS projects. I work in the main CPS building on the 17th floor. My daily duties consist of helping out my fellow co-workers (mostly senior project managers and the VP) with there projects. So I input and double check data in excel and access. My so far I am busy for almost the full 9 hours I work daily, and so far so good. I have no complaints about anything, except having to get up early at 645.
Porsche, it's good to hear that you're off to a happy start in the work world. Who was your student mentor? Keep in mind that if the day starts to drag (it's a long day compared to what it will be during the school year), tell your coworkers before doing anything else. LOTS OF LUCK THIS SUMMER!
Patrick, it sounds like this is a good fit for you. I have a friend who used to work at Tishman (or maybe still does, I'll find out: John Wilson). The really good thing about getting up early is that it will prepare you to continue when school starts, only you'll have to get up a little earlier then. Have you been able to get any bicycling in this summer?
I also work at Northern Trust in the Canal building. The orientation was rather long for the first day. We got finger printed and got our ids. We didnt get into our office until like 11:3o-12:00. I have my personal work space. I LOVE my co-workers. They helped me out alot and they were very welcoming. My day goes really quickly. There is always something for me to do around the office. During the day I put information into a database. I do opens and closes. I also file paper, get supplies, answer phones, and distribute mail. I am always busy with something to do. I had alot to learn on my first day but my co-workers helped me alot. I feel like Im really apart of a team around here and I feel like the work I do is helpful to the team. Mrs Heaney I was wondering if you could send me a first day book guide. I had made copies of my original but cant find the original to write in. I really like Northern.
Arnae - it is so nice to hear your good news about the job. I would like to tell everyone that getting along with your coworkers is really 90% of the job; Arnae said that she likes her work and it probably has alot to do with conversing, smiling, and working at getting adjusted to the people at the company. I will look for and send a copy of the journal to Arnae. GOOD LUCK!!! :)
I work at CMAP in the sears tower!! This is my third day and everythings fine. It's very laid-back here and my co-workers are hilarious. My boss is sooooo cool and very easy to talk to so far. The first day i didn't really do anything at all. All day yesterday and part of this morning i shredded a whole box of papers. I also put some mail in people's mailboxes. Not very fun but still needed to get done. I still don't know too many people here but i'm sure as the work load increases i'll meet everybody and also get to know my way around this place. So far i love this job :)
Hey Bloggers! I haven't started my work studies job yet,but I am working this summer so I just wanted to contribute to the conversation. I work at Wolfcrest&Partners. It is a young consulting company so right now it's just me and my boss. He is really nice and when it comes to work hours he understands. My day is normally short and I spend the majority of it in front of my computer. I go on websites and research companies and input all the data into a database. My official title is Senior Research Assosiate, sounds fancy right? well I do a lot of networking so that's not bad. I have no coworkers so I can't say anything there, but so far I like the job, it fits just right.
Anthony: Well it seems like this is the right place for you. I'm glad you like CMAP; in comparison with the other worksites, it is a more relaxed atmosphere. CMAP is a non-profit organization that works with the State of IL on road and transportation matters. If the Olympics come to Chicago in 2016 I'm sure they'll be highly involved.
On the topic of menial work: Everyone will exerience the smallest of tasks at work that seem meaningless and possibly boring, like shredding papers, filing & more filing, delivering mail, etc. Please keep in mind that these tasks need to be done at the company, and they are necessary. Please also don't get the attitude that any job is beneath you. Remember: ATTITUTE IS EVERYTHING and will make or break your experience.
Evelyn, so happy to see that you are in on the blog. It's important for everyone to participate so that you can share experiences with each other. Evelyn's job is with a company that she got on her own, but will move into a work study job in Sept. All work is meaningful because it gives you a perspective of what's out there.
Many people don't get these kinds of experiences until after college.
Enjoy the short hours of work and the summer, Evelyn.
Hi! Reading everyone's post has made me excited to start my job. Unfortunetly, I don't start working until August. However,Im glad everyone is enjoying their jobs!
Amy - Enjoy your summer. Nice to hear from you.
I started to work at Northern Trust at the end of June. I was so scared about starting the job because it was my first Job & I knew that it was going to be a really important business matter.
The first day was full of meeting almost everyone & a tour around the floor that I was going to be working on. My manager also talked to me about some of my responsibilities and introduced me to some machines that I was going to be working with also. My co-workers are really nice and the very first person I met was the one that reassured me that if I needed help with anything to not hesitate in asking for help, he is a very happy person and funny too. My first 2 weeks were dedicated to doing projects for him too, which was unexpected for me. I enjoyed working with him. Now I'm basically working with everybody! It's great because they make me feel part of the team. I came here and they really needed someone luckily I came just in time! :) they love me...lol I know my help is greatly appreciated...I'm told it is evry now and then randomly. A lot of my work I finish wayyyyy before it's deadline and they are admmired. I even became someone's hero!....but yeah! It's all great! i love Northern!oh by the way...everyone loved my "Attitude is Everything" flyer! :)it's up in my little cubicle.Hope that evry1 is having a great summer & that all is well!
Maritza - sounds like you fit in perfectly at the new job -- good for you. Happy to hear that you put up the poster!
I work for Northern Trust in the 181 West Madison building on the 27th floor in the Corporate Banking department. My experience so far has been stellar and definitely something I will take with me for a life time. I've been on my job for almost a month now. My official start date was June 29th. The orientation was okay I felt it was a bit rushed and left somethings unexplained but everything turned out okay. As for work and how that has been going, well it has honestly been really fun and a blast. My co-workers are extremely nice and really helpful. It has also been in my luck that I work with a fellow co-op student from Whitney Young. Iesha and me work together although she only works a half a day. My hours are from 8:30 to 4 and i work a 35 hour week. I don't really know my boss to well because she never seems to be in her office and she is always all over the place. The one good thing for me is that we have had an old co-op teaching us our job for about a month now. Her name is Joanna and she went to Curie High School. Her last day will be July 31 but I must say it was extremely helpful to have her teach us. She was able to explain everything in really simple terms and she always made sure we knew what we were doing. Also to help us they made a co-op binder for us and in it it explains every job that we have to do and the steps you need to take. Of course if all that wasn't enough my co-workers are really helpful in answering questions I might have for them. My day to day jobs vary except for everyday we receive credit memos that we must copy and deliver to the assigned people. For the most part though my job has a lot to do with legal documents, financial statements, and compliances that Northern receives from their clients. I do a lot of scanning copying filing and sorting. The one plus to my job is that i get a large amount of exercise in because the memos we deliver go to people in 3 different buildings and on all different floors. I travel daily through the Madison building and the Bank Building and occasionally we take a trip to the LaSalle building. Over all though I will say that my experience has been wonderful and I really think that I will enjoy the job a lot.
I am so happy to finally hear from Ryan! I get worried when I don't know what's going on with everyone and then I tend to fear that there are problems. So thanks for touching base here.
Very happy to hear about the job --it sounds nice that you're able to get out and about between buildings. I had a job like that in a law firm many years ago, & it was fun to move around the Loop while at work like that.
I'm really glad to hear that everyone is enjoying their jobs. Reading the posts gives me a sense of what my typical work day might be like. This makes me even more excited to start work in September!
I work at PepsiCo. I haven't started working yet, but I did go for a two week training a few weeks back. After the training I went to the hospital to have surgery (which is why I haven't had access to the computer, so my apologies). I work in the Talent Acquisition Department and once a week I work for the Legal Department at PepsiCo. I do tons of filing, am in charge of the supply closet, input data into excel for billing other departments, order and send out stuff (via UPS), make packets for New Hires and Orientation Folders, etc. I had a lot of fun while I was doing the training. Everyone is really nice and on the first day, my boss took me out to lunch! I'm going to start working 20 hour weeks next week. I was able to pick my own schedule so I chose morning hours so that I would be able to go out and do something with some friends after work. I'm glad to see other people are doing well and having fun at work as well. :) Can't wait to see eeveryone again!
Thanks for commenting, Alexandra. Slowly but surely everyone is getting their comments in; as we can see so far, each person has a very different situation even if they are at the same company. See you all soon!
I work at Northern Trust in the Madison building on the 11th floor. I work in the general accounting department. I am responsible for many daily tasks. My main tasks are inputting data onto the General Ledger and monitoring inter company expenses. The last few days and the first few days of the months are extremely busy so that kind of explains why I am so late on doing this. My co-workers and boss are great people are fun to work with. I arrive to work at 8am and leave at 5pm everyday and I rarely ever have free time. I rarely do small office tasks like filing and copying because I have so much other stuff to do. I have no huge complaints but my work load can be eased a bit. Overall, this is a good job and an even better experience.
Wow, Kevin - we're so glad to hear from you! I am surprised at how busy your job is - it's obviously very important for NTC that this position is filled by someone who can handle the workload, and it sounds like you're doing a great job at it. Stay focused and soon you'll be in school and on the part-time schedule.
Thanks and i just got back from a meeting where the CEO- Rick Waddell was speaking!
That is super-impressive. Not many people get the opportunity to hear the CEO of a major corp.
Interested to know: what was his topic of discussion (I'll guess: 'the economy'?)
How was it that you were invited to this meeting?
The meeting was about how the first 6 months have been going financially. The meeting was about how the first 6 months have been going financially. They talked about the economy and how the other banks have been doing and how strong of a bank Northern Trust is. The explination I got was that it was the “Financial Meeting” and that we were part of the financial department so that is how I got to go. There were about one hundred people there and I was told that almost all of them were upper and senior management.
COOL!
Yesterday was my first day at PepsiCo. I LOVE my job. The first day everyone was really friendly and helpful. I didn't do much my first day besides learning the basics. Today was quite busy, I was given two projects that are due on Friday. I'm also in charge of the supplies and mail. I work from 9 to 4 or 4:30 everyday, except Fridays I work 8 to 12. And as far as lunch I can take that anytime I want. So far I LOVE my job and have no complaints!
YEAH!! So happy that you're liking the job. PepsiCo will be perfect for you. Any questions, just email me.
Please remember that little book, too; it's considered an assignment when we get to school. (school, what's that?!!)
Enjoy - see you and everyone in a few weeks.
I already wrote a comment about how my first few days were going, but now that I've been at PepsiCo I just wanted to add a few things. I've noticed that it is extremely laid back here. I have taken a few days off (for doctors appointments, not for myself) and my manager is extremely understanding. I love that about her. Amy works on the floor right above mine so hopefully I will see her for lunch a couple of times. I work in two departments… Human Resources and then Legal once or twice a week. When I first came to Legal to introduce myself and work for about an hour or two (just to get started) I met some great people and they made me feel like I fit in with them. Since I want to study law after High School, this is the perfect place for me to be. I met the VP and the second time I came around he took me around and introduced me to everyone. He is a great guy and I’m really glad I had the chance to talk to him one on one. Yesterday was my third time working with Legal and I was invited to a meeting to talk about ongoing cases. I was invited because I’m interested in law and the team thought it would be a good learning experience for me. It was amazing hearing the attorneys and paralegals talk about their cases. I’m grateful for that opportunity. I’m really excited for Senior year to start and to keep working at PepsiCo. Hope everyone’s summer is going well!
Alex - it was great to hear from you again.
For everyone: opportunity comes in many disguises. Who would think that Alex would get exposure to Law at PepsiCo? That's how the work world works--one thing leads to another and opportunities arise.
I will be blasting out an email very soon for the 2nd & final blog assignment before school begins. See, I didn't keep you busy at all with this; it's just a way to get to know each other.
I work for PepsiCo in the transportation department. I am responsible for logging invoices into their system and sending them through UPS. I do a weekly carrier count for my manager and try to approve her carriers on FBA, I also update the weekly fuel every week and I rarely file which I am very happy about. Everyone here is extremely nice and helpful especially the old work study students who are the ones that trained me.
Claudia - welcome to the board! I'm glad to know that your PepsiCo job is going well. :) Before you know it, you'll be on the part-time schedule. I love how you referred to the previous group as 'old work study'; you'll be there soon!
I've been working for PepsiCo for the last 3 weeks in the Law Department. My main duties consist of filing, copying, faxing, and (new job) legalizing documents. I just learned how to legalize a Power of Attorney, which is a hiring of an attorney in another country. Lots of walking around Downtown, but interesting.
It's great to hear from you, Anthony. I think that it's great that you get out of the office and run around downtown.
See you all after Labor Day!
